Mr 4 has over 23 allergies, and has had an anaphylactic reaction on 8 different occasions. Just recently dairy has been removed from his diet in the lead up to his next endoscopy to see if we can get his Eosinophilic Esophagitis back in remission.

Needless to say, we are somewhat limited in what he can eat. And my boy is realising just how unfair this is…which breaks my heart a little.

I have baked with my two since they were about 2 years old, and it’s something that they really enjoy. Plus it’s a great way to practise our fine motor skills, and have them exposed to pre-math skills in a fun, no-pressure manner.

Now, usually I like to bake from scratch, but with all the exclusions, it just seemed easier to give one of these fancy new mixes a whirl.

The Deliciously Free Chocolate Cake mix was a Woolies find, and the other 2 came from a Health Food Store.

It’s clear to see the range of skills that your kids will get to develop when it comes to making cupcakes.

If you’re looking to work on or develop skills in a particular area, then you can think about how to incorporate that into the process. E.g. by shifting the position of the cupcake tray you could work on crossing the midline.

But the area of development that I love most about Cooking with Kids is…. their positive relationship with you and secure attachment.

Here are some additional benefits that your children are experiencing by cooking with you:

  • They are feeling valued as you are spending quality time with them
  • They are developing confidence in their own abilities
  • They are working on a life-skill
  • They have the opportunity to improve their executive functioning

So, if you’re feeling stressed about how to fit in the skill development that your child needs, or you are looking for a positive way to connect with your child, maybe Cooking with Kids is the way to go. I would love to hear about your own experiences cooking with kids.
